What these numbers rule out

This is the useful part of a mid-size dimensions page, and most sites leave it out. Four categories of product are excluded by the figures above, and knowing that saves you a freight return.

  • Full-size crossover tool boxes. 69 and 72 inch boxes are built for 64-66 inches of rail width. At 57 inches, a full-size box perches rather than mounts.
  • Standard 48-inch bed slides and drawer modules. 44.7 inches of wheel-well width is below what they need. Mid-size versions exist and are a separate product line.
  • Full-size tonneau covers. Sold per truck anyway, so this is less of a trap — but “universal” covers in this category are full-size.
  • Fixed-width full-size ladder racks. Several adjustable racks extend down far enough; fixed ones do not. Check the stated range against 57 inches.

Which number matters for which product

  1. Exterior bed rail width (about 57 in). The tool box size class. Points to the 60 in class. See what size tool box fits a Tacoma.
  2. Width between wheel wells (44.7 in). Anything sitting on the floor between the wells. The figure that rules out standard slides.
  3. Bed length (60.3 or 73.5 in). Drawer systems and slides, where length is exact.
  4. Bed depth (20.2 or 21.2 in). Varies by cab, which is unusual, and it is the shallowest of the four trucks here.

The generation splits

Three generations are in common use and they take different parts. This matters more on a Tacoma than on the half-tons because the aftermarket is smaller and part numbers are less forgiving.

  • 2005-2015 (second generation). Its own parts across covers, liners, flaps and the wheel-well swing cases.
  • 2016-2023 (third generation). The largest installed base and the best-served by the aftermarket.
  • 2024 onward (fourth generation). Different bed hardware; parts are still filling in. Check listings carefully.

The measurement to take yourself

Measure the exterior bed rail width outside-to-outside across the rail tops nearest the cab, tape taut, and the wheel-well width at the narrowest point with whatever liner is in the bed. On a Tacoma the margins are tight enough that this is not optional.

60 inches, which is the size class that matters: a mid-size truck's exterior rail width is around 57 in, and the 69 and 72 in boxes everyone else sells are built for the mid sixties. This one is not.

Who should skip it. Budget aluminum with a budget latch. It solves the fitment problem, not the security problem.

What works

What does not

  • Thin-wall aluminum
  • Latch is the weak point

A swing-out case that mounts in the wheel-well void and rotates out over the tailgate. It takes zero bed floor and zero rail space, which on a 5 ft Tacoma bed is the only acceptable answer.

Who should skip it. It holds what a milk crate holds. This is a case for straps, a jack handle and a tool roll — not a tool box.

What works

  • Uses space that is otherwise completely wasted
  • Swings out over the tailgate — no climbing in
  • Leaves the bed floor and both rails free for a cover or a rack

What does not

  • Small capacity
  • One side only; the pair doubles the cost
  • Fitment is model and year specific

Built for the 5 ft and 6 ft Tacoma bed and the Colorado/Canyon, which means it actually clears the wheel wells instead of perching on them. That is the whole problem with putting full-size boxes on mid-size trucks.

Who should skip it. Model-specific fitment cuts both ways. Change trucks and the box does not come with you.

Questions people actually ask

How wide is a Tacoma bed between the wheel wells?
44.7 inches, consistent across the lineup from SR to TRD Pro per Toyota's published specifications. That is below the 48 inches a standard full-size bed slide or drawer module needs, which rules out a large part of the bed storage market.
How long is a Tacoma bed?
60.3 inches for the short bed and 73.5 inches for the long bed. Bed depth is 20.2 in on a Double Cab and 21.2 in on an XtraCab — the depth varies by cab, which is unusual.
What is the Tacoma's bed rail width?
UWS publishes the exterior bed rail width as about 57 inches, against roughly 64-66 inches on the full-size half-tons. That seven-to-nine-inch gap is why full-size crossover tool boxes do not fit.
How deep is a Tacoma bed?
20.2 inches on a Double Cab and 21.2 inches on an XtraCab — the shallowest of the four trucks this site covers. One consequence is that a drawer system's raised floor costs you proportionally more vertical capacity here than on a deeper bed.
Do Tacoma generations share bed accessories?
Largely not. The 2005-2015, 2016-2023 and 2024-onward trucks take different covers, liners, mats, flaps and swing cases. The third generation has the best aftermarket coverage; fourth-generation parts are still filling in.
