How we know:Spec-verifiedOwner-report-verifiedWhat these mean

The two numbers that decide almost every bed accessory purchase are the exterior bed rail width and the interior width between the wheel wells. Here they are for the four trucks this site covers, alongside the lengths and depths.

Published bed dimensions. Exterior rail widths from UWS's bed width guide; interior figures from each manufacturer's published specifications. Blank cells are figures the manufacturer does not publish or configurations that do not exist.

How to read it

  1. Exterior bed rail width is the crossover tool box number. It is measured outside-to-outside across the top of the rails nearest the cab, and a box's advertised length is larger because the ends overhang.
  2. Width between wheel wells is the floor number. It decides chests, drawer modules and bed slides. A standard 48-inch slide needs this to be comfortably above 48, which rules out the Tacoma.
  3. Bed depth decides whether a load clears the rails, and how much vertical capacity a drawer system's raised floor costs you.
  4. Length at floor is what you order drawer systems and slides against, and it is exact rather than approximate.

The three things this table tells you at a glance

  • The three half-tons are interchangeable for tool box purposes. 64, 65 and 66 inches of rail width all take the same full-size boxes. The differences between these trucks matter for covers and liners, not for boxes.
  • The Tacoma is a different market. Seven to nine inches narrower at the rails and six inches narrower at the wheel wells. Full-size parts do not transfer.
  • The Silverado has the deepest bed. 22.4 inches against 20.2 on a Double Cab Tacoma. Two inches of depth across a bed is real volume, and it is the reason a drawer system costs proportionally less capacity on a Silverado.

What this table cannot tell you

Three things decide fitment that no dimension captures, and all three cause more wrong orders than the numbers do:

  • Body-style splits. The 2019 Silverado and the 2019-onward Ram were each sold as a new body style and a Classic in the same year, taking different covers, liners and racks.
  • Factory bed options. RamBox changes the Ram's usable bed entirely. Ford's Pro tailgate, factory bed steps and fold-flat rear floor storage all exclude specific parts.
  • Electric variants. The electric F-150 has different bed hardware — charge outlets, tie-down positions, drain locations — so mats and liners need to state compatibility.

Best for: The box you buy once

Heavy-wall aluminum, a foam-filled RigidCore lid that does not flex when you sit on it, and a low profile that still clears most rear glass. This is the crossover to buy if you intend to keep the truck.

Who should skip it. Skip it on a 5'5" short bed. At 69 inches it will sit on the rails, but you lose a disproportionate share of a short bed and the money is better spent on a side-mount pair.

What works

  • Foam-filled lid does not oil-can under body weight
  • Low profile clears rear glass on most full-size crew cabs
  • Heavy-wall extrusion survives being used as a step
  • Gas struts are serviceable rather than sealed units

What does not

  • Among the most expensive aluminum crossovers on the shelf
  • 69 in is a full-size length — not a mid-size answer
  • Matte black shows scuffs more than diamond plate

Fits

  • Full-size beds — exterior rail width in the mid sixties (F-150 about 65 in, Silverado 1500 about 64 in, Ram 1500 about 66 in)
  • F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500 and Sierra 1500 standard and long beds

Does not fit

  • Mid-size trucks — Tacoma, Colorado, Ranger, Frontier
  • Beds outside UWS's stated fitment range for this box
  • Trucks already running a hard folding tonneau without a notched panel

60 inches, which is the size class that matters: a mid-size truck's exterior rail width is around 57 in, and the 69 and 72 in boxes everyone else sells are built for the mid sixties. This one is not.

Who should skip it. Budget aluminum with a budget latch. It solves the fitment problem, not the security problem.

A 40-70 in ratcheting bar that braces across the bed and holds a load against the tailgate. It is the cheapest piece of kit on this site and it stops more rattling, sliding and scratched paint than anything else you can buy for the money.

Who should skip it. It is a brace, not a wall. It does not partition the bed into compartments and it will not hold a heavy load on its own.

Questions people actually ask

Which truck has the widest bed?
Of the four here, the Ram 1500 — 51.0 inches between the wheelhouses and about 66 inches of exterior rail width. The Silverado has the widest floor at about 71.4 in and the deepest bed at 22.4 in.
Are F-150, Silverado and Ram tool boxes interchangeable?
For crossover boxes, largely yes — 64, 65 and 66 inches of rail width all take the same full-size 69 and 72 inch classes. Covers, liners and racks are a different matter entirely and are model, year and body-style specific.
Why will a full-size bed slide not fit a Tacoma?
Because a standard slide is 48 inches wide and the Tacoma has 44.7 inches between the wheel wells. Mid-size slide and drawer ranges exist as separate products; the full-size ones physically do not go in.
Which bed is deepest?
The Silverado 1500, at 22.4 inches of box height. The F-150 is 21.4 in, the Ram 1500 21.4-21.5 in and the Tacoma 20.2 in on a Double Cab or 21.2 in on an XtraCab. Two inches across a bed is real volume.
Do these dimensions change by cab configuration?
Not for the half-tons — the cargo box figures hold across cabs for a given bed length. The Tacoma is the exception: its bed depth differs between Double Cab (20.2 in) and XtraCab (21.2 in).
