A full-size crossover tool box fits a Ram 1500 — the 69-inch or 72-inch size class. UWS publishes the Ram's exterior bed rail width as about 66 inches, which is the widest of the four trucks this site covers and gives full-size boxes the most margin of any of them.
If your truck does not have RamBox, buy a full-size crossover with confidence. If it does, check the box manufacturer's RamBox note before anything else — the lids interrupt the rail a clamp needs.
Why the box is longer than your bed is wide
The box's end caps overhang the rails rather than sitting between them, and the mounting requirement is at least 1.5 inches of box resting on each rail. A 69-inch box bridging 66 inches of rail width is correct and leaves a healthy margin on each side.
Take your own measurement, then check it against the manufacturer's fitment chart rather than matching numbers.
RamBox: the check that comes first
RamBox puts a lockable storage box in each bed wall, and the lids sit in the rail line. That matters for a crossover tool box in a specific way: the clamp or J-hook needs a continuous rail lip to grip, and the RamBox lid is in the way of part of it.
Establish whether you have RamBox. Look at the bed walls. The lids are obvious.
Check the box manufacturer's RamBox fitment note. Some boxes are explicitly fine; some are explicitly not.
Consider the alternatives. On a RamBox truck, a chest box on the floor uses no rail at all and is often the cleaner answer — and you already have lockable in-rail storage for the small things.
Measure the remaining usable interior width. The RamBox boxes reduce it, which matters for anything sitting on the floor.
The four-minute check
Exterior bed rail width. Outside to outside across the rail tops nearest the cab. Expect about 66 in.
Interior wheelhouse width. Ram publishes 51.0 in non-RamBox; measure yours with the liner in.
Cargo box depth. Ram publishes 21.4 in for the 5'7" bed and 21.5 in for the 6'4".
Which truck. New body or Classic, and RamBox or not.

Heavy-wall aluminum, a foam-filled RigidCore lid that does not flex when you sit on it, and a low profile that still clears most rear glass. This is the crossover to buy if you intend to keep the truck.
Who should skip it. Skip it on a 5'5" short bed. At 69 inches it will sit on the rails, but you lose a disproportionate share of a short bed and the money is better spent on a side-mount pair.

What works
+Foam-filled lid does not oil-can under body weight
+Low profile clears rear glass on most full-size crew cabs
+Heavy-wall extrusion survives being used as a step
+Gas struts are serviceable rather than sealed units
What does not
−Among the most expensive aluminum crossovers on the shelf
−69 in is a full-size length — not a mid-size answer
11.0 cu ft of aluminum in the low-profile saddle format that fleets have standardized on for decades. It is the box every other box gets compared with, and the reason is parts availability and a lid that stays sealed.
Who should skip it. It is the most expensive way to store tools in a pickup bed short of a drawer system. If this is a personal truck that sees a job every other weekend, the money is better spent elsewhere.

The narrow-body crossover. It eats noticeably less fore-aft bed length than a standard 19-20 in box, which is the whole point on a 5'5" or 5'7" bed where every inch in front of the wheel wells matters.
Who should skip it. If you carry long power tools in cases, the narrow body will fight you. A 19 in box swallows a circular saw case flat; this one does not.

What works
+Gives back several inches of bed floor versus a standard-width box
+Light enough for a one-person install
+Cheapest route into a real aluminum crossover
What does not
−Narrow interior will not take large tool cases flat
−Thinner material than the heavy-wall boxes
−Published dimensions vary by listing — measure before you order
A 30 in, 17 in deep triangle box with multi-tier interior trays. The triangle shape sits in the bulkhead corner of the bed, and it is the only chest format that gives you drawers rather than a pit.
Who should skip it. It is heavy and it is expensive for its volume. If you just need a sealed box for straps and chains, the money is wasted.

Questions people actually ask
What size tool box fits a Ram 1500?
A full-size crossover in the 69 or 72 inch class. The Ram's exterior bed rail width is about 66 inches, the widest of the four trucks here, so full-size boxes have the most margin. If you have RamBox, check the manufacturer's RamBox fitment note first.
Can you fit a crossover tool box on a RamBox truck?
Sometimes, and it has to be checked rather than assumed. The RamBox lids sit in the rail line, and a crossover box's clamp needs a continuous rail lip to grip. Some boxes publish explicit RamBox fitment; a chest box on the floor avoids the problem entirely.
Do I even need a tool box if I have RamBox?
For hand tools, fasteners and consumables, RamBox already gives you two lockable weather-sealed compartments — most of what a side box does. What it does not take is cased power tools, so a chest or a drawer system is usually the better complement than a crossover box.
How much bed space does a tool box take on a Ram 5'7 bed?
A standard 19-inch-deep crossover leaves about 48 in of the 67.4 in floor. On the 6'4" bed it leaves about 57 in. On the short bed, a narrow-body box is the better answer if you are buying a crossover at all.
Will a 72 inch box fit a Ram 1500?
Generally yes, and with more margin than on an F-150 or a Silverado given the Ram's wider 66 in rail width. Check the manufacturer's fitment chart for your year and body style, and separately for RamBox.
